Overview

Company Name: Uber

Owner: Garrett Camp and Travis Kalanick

Price to Join: Free to Join

My Rating: 7.9 out of 10.0

Uber is a multinational transportation network company primarily known for its ridesharing and food delivery services. A lot of people have already heard of Uber and used their services. The amazing thing about this company is that they hire people like you and me as drivers.

The drivers work through the app and drop the riders to their desired location. The rider and the driver review each other to promote accountability and safety.

The founders of this company are Garrett Camp and Travis Kalanick. Uber was earlier known as UberCab, but its name was changed in the year 2011. The company has been around since 2009, which makes it one of the oldest companies in this space.

In this Uber review, we will see if this popular company can prove to be a good source of income for the drivers. I highly recommend that you read this review in order to learn more about it.

How Does Uber Work?

You can sign up as a driver if you have your own car and a smartphone. The sign-up process should be smooth if you have all the required documents and don’t have a shady background. The requirements that you need to meet are more or less the same in all countries.

You need to be at least 18 years old and clear a background screening.

You also need certain documents such as a driver’s license, proof of residency and car documents like vehicle registration certificate.

If you don’t have a car, then they can still help you in earning. Uber can help you lease a car or get a discount while purchasing a car. You can also join a fleet to get access to a car without spending any money.

I like the fact that they provide plenty of options for the drivers, so the drivers can choose the option that suits them the best.

Let me give you a rough idea about how it works. First of all, the rider will open the app and request to be picked up from his or her location. You will see the requests of the riders near you. You can see where the rider wants to go when the request shows up.

If you feel that the rider’s request is worth it, then you can accept it and go to pick up the rider.

It is important to note that you have to accept most trip requests. You can decline some trip requests, but you have to accept the majority if you are online. You can go offline if you don’t want to work or take a break.

You should verify the name of the rider and then proceed to the destination. You have to pickup other riders on the way in case of an UberPool.

This allows you to make more money while the riders also save money by sharing the ride.

You have to wait at the pickup location for 2 to 5 minutes before you can cancel the trip. Riders are charged a cancellation fee in certain cases when you cancel the trip. The cancellation fee is paid to you.

You can also wait for a longer duration if you want to. I recommend waiting for a while if the rider promises to reach the pickup location soon. This would be much faster than going for another trip in a lot of cases.

After the trip is complete, the payment will be calculated automatically and paid to you unless the rider has chosen cash payment method.

In case of cash payment, you will be paid by the rider after the trip is complete.

You will have to review the rider after the trip is complete. The rider will also review you, and you have to remember that your ratings matter a lot. You have to ensure that you provide the best experience to the rider and don’t misbehave in any manner.

You may even lose the opportunity to work for Uber if your overall ratings fall below your city standard.

They automatically charge the riders for the tolls that you have to pay on your trips. You are reimbursed the amount that you pay for the tolls every week.

Overall, this is a decent way to earn if you are able to do well by making the right decisions.

How Much Does It Cost to Join?

It is free to work as an Uber driver in the sense that Uber doesn’t charge you for the privilege.

However, you need a car and spend money on maintaining it. You also need to pay for fuel and other car related expenses. So, you can end up spending a decent amount of money on your car depending on how many trips you do in a month.

How Much Can You Earn?

There was a time when the drivers used to earn a lot more than they earn now. The company introduced changes in its incentive model, which led to lower income than earlier.

The report from the Economic Policy Institute for the year 2018 clearly mentioned that the average pay of Uber drivers was $9.21 per hour. I have to agree that the average earnings of the drivers aren’t good at all.

The fact is that averages don’t represent the entire situation, so there are drivers that are making a lot more. I have no doubt that there are drivers that are making a full-time income through this company.

The problem is that not all drivers will get there even after driving full-time. A lot of factors will decide your earnings such as surge pricing and location.

If you live in a big city with a lot of active riders and drive during peak hours, then you can earn a lot more than your colleagues.

If you live in a relatively smaller city or a village, then your earnings will not be good, and you won’t be able to take much advantage of surge pricing.

In short, the earning potential is not as high as the company wants you to believe. However, you can earn a full-time income by working full-time in certain cases.

Are There Any Complaints?

Yes, there are a lot of complaints. I have listed a couple of complaints below.

"I have been trying to sign up to drive with Uber quite unsuccessfully for the better part of a year.
Uber steals what little drivers make and puts the money in their fat pockets. It doesn’t even come close to making minimum wage."

Bottom Line

Uber is not a scam. I think that you can work part-time for this company during peak hours to make a decent income.

Working full-time would be too stressful and not pay you enough. I still leave the final decision in your hands.

Nevertheless, you still have the final decision if being an Uber driver is worth it or not. Good luck and decide wisely.

Pros

  • A large consumer base
  • Good reputation
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • Low pay
  • Unpredictable changes in the incentive model
  • Difficult to make a full-time income

How Can You Earn Money Online?

It seems like you want to try on becoming an Uber driver because you want to have a more lucrative source of income. It also feels like you are already tired of not earning that much from your current job.

But let me tell you that this type of job is only good if you are looking for a short term source of income. It is because there are plenty of factors that dictates your earnings. And this kind of job doesn't secure a steady source of paycheck.

On the other hand, if you are still looking for new source of earning, then you can also take a look into my personal choice.

My best suggestion would be through making your own online business with a support from community. Basically it is a modern way of making money. And it doesn't require any selling.

Right now, I am on my third year in this type of business and I am already enjoying the fruits of my labor. So, I want to share my success with you.
