VIPKid Review

What is VIPKid?

VIPKid allows people to teach English to students all over China. This is a good initiative to use technology for overcoming language barriers. They aim to provide a global education by connecting teachers and students from all over the world. The age of the children that are taught is usually 4 to 12 years old. Even Kobe Bryant, the famous NBA player, has invested money in this company. This company is gaining momentum, and maybe they will enable kids in more countries to learn English in the future.

Cindy Mi is the founder of this company. Her experience as an English tutor helped her start what we know as VIPKid. The company has seen good growth, and it will help more students over the years. They have more than 70,000 teachers and 600,000 students.

In this review, we will see if this company is a scam or not. This review is not biased, so you can trust it.

How does VIPKid work?
First, you need to meet their requirements before you can apply to work as a teacher. If you don’t meet the requirements, then there is no way that they will even consider you. You need a Bachelor degree and pass through their application process. Let me make it very clear that they are not going to hire just anyone with a Bachelor degree. They are very strict and look for high-quality teachers.

Now let us focus on the application process. The application process is divided into four parts. The first part is where you fill your basic info. They will ask you about your name, your country, your teaching experience and your level of education among other things. It will only take a few minutes to fill up everything.

They will ask you if you have taught in K-12 classrooms in the United States or Canada. This is not going to affect your chances of being accepted even if the answer is a no. They will email you the result of your application within one business day.

The next step is demo lesson. Let us assume that they decide to invite you for a 30-minute session with a VIPKid recruiter. The session will allow the recruiter to test your ability to teach. Alternatively, you can record a demo and send it to them for evaluation. The website doesn’t mention it, but there are two more ways of passing this step. You can do the smart demo on your mobile or go to a coaching center near you if you live in a big city.

The third step is called certification center. You will learn about how to teach and maybe do a short quiz. After that you will have to do a mock class or certification. There are two options here that you have to choose from. You can go for the beginner level certification or the intermediate level certification depending on your abilities.

You will be given material to prepare and then do a mock class with your mentor. You can do this multiple times if you don’t pass in the first attempt. So, there is no need to rush or worry at this point. You can get additional certifications later, so you can get the beginner level certification to get started.

After you pass a mock class certification, you will proceed to the final step in the application process. This is the step where you sign your contract and upload relevant documents. They also have a background check that they will do for ensuring that you don’t have a criminal background.
Even though they hire people from all over the world, getting hired from all over the world is not going to be easy.

They want you to have legal eligibility to work in the US or Canada. This doesn’t mean that you have to live there, but you should be eligible to work there. You do need to have citizenship or Green Card as a proof that you are eligible to work there.

You need to have a near native level of English if you don’t have a native level of English. With all these requirements, you will have a hard time being accepted if you live in countries like Philippines or Japan.

You also need some teaching experience to be accepted. You should have at least one year of experience in teaching kids. It is not necessary that your experience is recent, but it needs to be true. This can be an issue because a lot of people haven’t actually taught kids for one year or more. I don’t think that teaching your own kids counts.

How much does it cost to join?

It is free to join, and you won’t have to spend any money while working there as well.

How much can I earn?

I like the fact that they don’t ask their teachers to hide their earnings, so there is plenty of information available about how much teachers are making. They claim that you can earn up to $22 per hour, which is true.

However, you will most likely not earn $22 per hour right from the start. You can earn in the range of $14 to $22 per hour depending on how well you do in the application process.

It all depends on how many hours you put in. There are people that work only 2 to 3 hours a day and still make $10,000 to $25,000 per year. This is a nice extra income that will really help you in paying the bills. It is actually possible to make this your full-time job.

They have incentives and offers that can allow you to make even more money. I think that if you are able to help other people become teachers and sign up by using your referral code, then you can earn a lot more. There was one person that made $130,000 in a year because she recruited people and helped them do well.

In short, the earning potential is good, and I can’t complain about it. If you put in the work and be consistent, then this could give you the income that you want.

Are there any complaints?

Yes, I have listed some complaints below.
Either wake up early (4:30 am) or stay up late (2 am) because of the time difference between the U.S./Canada and China.
There is no job security.

Conclusion
VIPKid cannot be called a scam. This is a solid option for making a part-time income. Making a full-time income is possible, but it will be tricky because you won’t always get students to teach when you are available and other issues. So, I recommend trying this part-time. Good luck.

Pros
Flexible schedule
Nice pay

Cons
Sometimes, you won’t get a reservation when you are available
No job security
