What is the doTERRA?

doTERRA is a multi-level marketing company that is known for selling essential oils. It was founded in Utah in the year 2008. The effectiveness of essential oils is something that is debatable, but there is no doubt that they are popular.

The products offered by the company are organic so they appeal to people who are looking for organic products. They also offer products in the categories of personal care, weight management and accessories. This company has multiple founding executives including the current CEO and Chairman David Stirling.

In this review, I will take a closer look at this company and try to determine whether this is a scam or not. This is based on my honest research about it. I recommend that you read the entire review before thinking about joining this company.

How Does doTERRA work?

According to the company, there are two fundamental ways on how you can earn money and these are retail markups and bonuses. Let us take a look at the ways of earning money through the compensation plan.

FAST START BONUS

This bonus is paid on the commissionable orders placed in the first 60 days by new Wellness Advocates or wholesale customers. It is paid to the first, second and third level enrollers. Basically, you are the first level enroller if you personally enroll someone and your enroller will be the second level enroller and so on. This is how this bonus is paid.

First level enroller- 20%

Second level enroller- 10%

Third level enroller- 5%

You will need to have a 100 personal volume Loyalty Rewards order to earn this bonus.

POWER OF THREE BONUS

This bonus can pay you $50, $250 or $1500 depending on your qualifications. You will need three personally sponsored Wellness Advocates or wholesale customers with qualified LRP (Loyalty Rewards Program) orders and a minimum team volume of 600 to earn $50 bonus.

You can qualify to earn the $50 bonus by making a qualified LRP order.

The $250 is paid when the three personally sponsored Wellness Advocates or wholesale customers who assisted you, also qualify for it. The only requirement to qualify for this bonus is qualifying for the $50 bonus.

UNI-LEVEL BONUS

This bonus pays you based on the organizational volume and rank. In simple words, you will earn a lot of money if your team performs well and you qualify for the higher ranks. The bonus is paid in the range of 2%-7% on multiple levels and you will earn more on deeper levels.

INFINITY PERFORMANCE POOLS

There are three different Infinity Performance Pools and they represent four percent of the company volume. When you qualify for the higher ranks, you will earn shares in these Infinity Performance Pools. The amount of bonus will be divided among the people who have shares in the Pool.

There are some other bonuses like the Diamond Performance Pools. You can earn around 25% from your retail sales in addition to the bonuses that I have mentioned above. You will have to participate in the Loyalty Rewards Program to earn certain bonuses and it will cost you money every month.

Overall, the compensation plan is not unique or amazing, but it can be very profitable if you are great in recruiting and selling.

How Much Does It Cost to Join?

You are required to pay a $35 registration fee to join in doTERRA. The cost of joining is not high and it is fair in my opinion.

You will also have to make a 100 personal volume Loyalty Rewards order every month to earn certain bonuses. The fact that you have to buy products monthly can be a cause of worry because you may lose money if you don’t sell any products or earn from bonuses during a month.

How Much Can I Earn?

I was able to find an opportunity and earning disclosure summary published by the company for the year 2016. We are going to look at the figures as they will give you a good idea about your potential earnings.

The people at the entry level ranks earned from $350 to $1,370 annually in commissions and they accounted for 17% of all doTERRA members.

4% of the members of this company at the mid-level ranks had average annual earnings in the range of $3,650 to $8,900 per year. These earnings are fine, but keep in mind that only 4% of all members earned in this range. The highest amount of commissions were earned by the people at the highest levels that were only 0.5% of all members. So your earnings will most likely be low if you decide to join this company.

Are there Any Complaints?

Yes, and I have listed some of the major concerns below.

When you first start, you can move up but after you get to a certain position, the opportunities decline.

The pay is not that appealing.

Bottom Line

In my opinion, doTERRA is not a scam. They still offer some helpful ways on how you can have your own business.

On the other hand, I must say that they still have rooms for improvement. The support can be improved in order to guide the members better. If you are great at selling and recruiting and have the passion on the products that they offer then you may join in this company. Nevertheless, I still leave the final decision in your hands. Good luck and choose wisely.

Pros

  • Teaches entrepreneurial skills
  • Plenty of ways of earning

Cons

  • Climb the ranks to earn more
  • Support can be improved
  • Build a team to earn more bonus

I know that you want to join in doTERRA because you are already tired of not earning that much from your current job. I also feel that you want to have a new source of income.

But let me tell you that this type of business is not that easy. It requires patience and passion towards the products that you are promoting. And you have to be good at recruiting and selling.

On the other hand, if you are still looking for an effective and efficient way of earning, then you can also look into my personal favorite. My best suggestion would be through making your own online business with a support from community. Basically it is a modern way of making money. And this will enable you to enjoy your working time at home.

Right now, I am on my second year in this community and I am already harvesting the fruits of my labor. So, I want to share my success with you.

  1. Doterra sounds like a typical mlm company, and while it may not be s scam — the fact that only 4% of people who join are making decent money makes me very concerned if I were to join it.

Also I’m not sure if this is common thing between mlm companies, but I don’t think I’d ever join a company that makes you buy things every month like this one does.

    Thanks for the heads up.

    • Actually, I commend MLM companies for the earning potential that you can get. On the other hand, I must say that it is not for everyone because of the recruitment part.

  2. Thank you for this information! I have participated in a ffew MLM, and some are good, and some are total scams.I can tell you really dug deep on the issues!
