What is the Longaberger?

Longaberger is a company that is known for selling baskets of different shapes and sizes. It does not only sell baskets, but it also sells home and lifestyle products.

By the way, Dave Longaberger opened J.W.’s Baskets in the year 1976 and this business grew from there. Dave found out that home shows were an effective way to sell the baskets and the direct sales organization of this company came into existence. On the other hand, this multi-level marketing company has been struggling in the recent years. The future of this company is therefore hard to predict.

In this review, I will take a closer look at this company and try to determine whether this is a scam or not. This is based on my honest research it. I recommend that you read the entire review before thinking about joining this company.

How Does Longaberger Business Works?

I could not find the detailed compensation plan of this company on their website. There are some information available about it, but that is not enough to clarify everything. However, I was able find more information online after some research.

There are different levels in the compensation plan and the lowest one is Home Consultant.

As a Home Consultant, you will earn 25% commission on your personal sales. You will also get a website so that you can sell the products online. The next level is Senior Consultant and this level allows you to earn overrides on the sales of your direct recruits. You will not be paid the money you earn from overrides until you are promoted to Management Bound Executive Home Consultant.

You will earn 1% override on your direct recruit’s override sales and 0.5% override on showroom sales.

If you want to earn overrides, then you must qualify by having $350 or more in personal sales credit or one direct qualified recruit per month. You can become an Executive Home Consultant by sponsoring and maintaining three direct qualified recruits.

At this level, you will earn 2% override on your personal and direct recruit’s override sales and 1% on showroom sales. If you are promoted to Management Bound Executive Home Consultant, then you will be paid the money you earn from overrides as an Executive Home Consultant.

The qualifications for earning the overrides as an Executive Home Consultant are the same as Senior Home Consultant.

If you aren’t promoted to Management Bound Executive Home Consultant within a rolling two-year period, then you will not be paid the money you made from overrides.

When you meet all the qualifications for being a Management Bound Executive Home Consultant, then you will earn 4% override sales for yourself and your direct referrals as well as 3% showroom sales for yourself and your direct referrals.

These are only some of the levels and the higher levels that offer rewards. The qualifications for the higher levels are much more complex and difficult to achieve. The main way of selling the product would be house parties. You will have to find hosts for the parties and ensure that maximum people attend the party for making enough sales.

I think it would be fairly difficult to sell the products after some time as you run out of friends and family.

As far as the compensation plan is concerned, I found it much harder to understand than the compensation plan of other MLM companies. The compensation plan seems to have a lower number of ways of making money when compared to other MLM companies.

How Much Does It Cost to Join?

There are two kits that you can choose from if you are interested in joining. The Business Essentials Plus Kit costs $264 and the Business Essentials Kit costs $89. You will have to pay additional money for shipping both of the kits. The kits contain products and the value of the products in the kits is significantly higher than their prices.

How Much Can I Earn?

There are many factors that will affect your earnings like your marketing skills, team building skills and the popularity of the products. The products of this company aren’t that popular when compared to some other MLM companies. I think it would be harder to sell the products of this company.

Your earnings will depend a lot on your ability to find new people to sell the products. It can be hard for most people to find someone to sell the products when they have already made sales to their family and friends.

Your team is also very important because you can’t reach the higher levels without having a great team. If you don’t have the necessary team members to reach a rank, then it would be impossible to monetize the other ways of earning.

After considering many factors I think that most people will not make a good income through this company. You have a better chance of making a high income in other MLM companies.

Are there Any Complaints?

Yes, and I have listed some of the major concerns below.

Product delivery can be improved.

It was hard to find people who can afford the products.

Bottom Line

I don’t think that this Longaberger is a scam because it would not have lasted this long. They still offer some helpful information on how you can start your own business.

On the other hand, it is true that this company is not going through its best time. I don’t know if it will recover or not, so I suggest that you do your due diligence before investing your money. It would be difficult to succeed in this business if you don’t really know what you are doing.

Nevertheless, I still leave the final decision in your hands. Good luck and choose wisely.

  • Great Earning Potential if done right
  • Teaches entrepreneurial skills

  • Expensive products
  • Support can be improved
  • Need to reach high ranks to earn more

I know that you want to invest in Longaberger because you are already exhausted of not earning that much from your current job.

But let me tell you that this kind of business is not a walk in the park. You have to love what you are doing in order to keep your fire burning and sell more. Personally, I am not a fan of MLM business.

Now, your next question is, is there other way to make money at home? My best suggestion would be through making your own online business with a support from community. Basically it is a modern way of making money. And this will enable you to enjoy your working time at home.

Right now, I am on my second year in this community and I am already harvesting the fruits of my labor. So, I want to share my success with you.

One comment on “What is the Longaberger? Is It Legit or Scam?

  1. Hi, John. Going through what you had to say about this company, Longaberger as presented in your article I have some questions about their business model structure.
You did an outstanding job in explaining Longaberger’s somewhat convoluted compensation plan involving overrides, percentages one could earn based on the level that he/she is at and so on.

I would want to know how deep could one’s downline go regarding levels? Would it be 3, 4, 5, or 10 levels? You stated that not all of the info about the compensation plan was present on the website. This has always been a bit of a turn-off for me when trying to analyze the legitimacy and integrity of an online MLM business. If not everything is there on the site, is the company trying to hide something?

If a particular person were somewhat intrigued about getting involved with a company such as Longaberger, the fact that not all of the info is provided about the compensation plan would be available should give him/her a bit of a pause before signing on the bottom line. It should be for EVERY person as well, but then again there are too many uneducated and naive people looking to make a fast buck online through owning a business that he/she often fails to take into consideration everything about a particular program before forking over even a dime.

I would also like to know any type of training that would be provided by this company in teaching members how to market the products that are offered. If a “newbie” has no obvious prior experience at this, and the company’s training/education program is lacking then the odds would be against this person achieving financial success in promoting Longaberger’s products in his/her business.

You gave this company basically a “C” grade as a business opportunity. Passing, but certainly not the best program out there!
